As a financial institution, RiverWind is always looking for new ways to make ourselves more secure to instill further confidence in our clients. That’s why we are changing our website and email address URLs from ‘.com’ to ‘.BANK’.
“The move to ‘.BANK’ is a business decision each financial institution must make for itself,” said Bill Patton, RiverWind Bank Chief Executive Officer. “We decided it was a priority for us to enhance our security and provide our customers with an easy way to authenticate our email communications and website.”
‘.BANK’ is a gated domain, like ‘.gov’ or ‘.edu,’ used by verified banks. While ‘.com’ can be used or purchased by anyone, ‘.BANK’ can only be used by a verified financial institution. This allows customers to know that the emails from us are from us.
To obtain a ‘.BANK’, the bank must first be verified by fTLD and then re-verified annually. Hackers and thieves are not able to get a ‘.BANK’ domain to create fake or look-a-like websites or email addresses, as they can with ‘.com’ and other publicly available domains.
Along with being verified, financial institutions who use the ‘.BANK’ domain are also required to implement additional security requirements intended to thwart phishing, spoofing, cybersquatting and other malicious cyber activities.
For our customers and clients, make sure to check that all emails from RiverWind or our employees end with the ‘.BANK’ URL to confirm it’s authentic. It would also be a good idea to take this opportunity to update your email contacts and any bookmarks you have for our site.
